Roles and Responsibilities of an Assistant Accountant

Job Title: Assistant Accountant

Department: Finance and Accounts

Reports To: Accountant/Finance Manager

Job Summary

The Assistant Accountant supports the accounting department by maintaining financial records, processing transactions, preparing reports, and ensuring compliance with company policies and accounting standards. The role assists in the day-to-day financial operations of the organization.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

• Assist in preparing and maintaining accurate financial records and accounting documents.
• Process accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions.
• Prepare invoices, payment vouchers, receipts, and journal entries.
• Reconcile bank statements and company accounts regularly.
• Assist in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.
• Monitor and track expenses to ensure they are within approved budgets.
• Maintain the general ledger and update accounting records promptly.
• Support payroll preparation and ensure accurate salary processing.
• Assist with tax computations, statutory deductions, and regulatory filings.
• Help coordinate internal and external audits by providing necessary documentation.
• Verify and process employee expense claims and reimbursements.
• Maintain proper filing systems for financial documents and records.
• Monitor outstanding receivables and follow up on overdue payments.
• Ensure compliance with company financial policies, accounting standards, and relevant regulations.
• Assist in inventory reconciliation and asset register maintenance where applicable.
• Provide administrative support to the finance department as required.
• Perform any other accounting duties assigned by the Accountant or Finance Manager.

Qualifications and Requirements

• Minimum of OND/HND/Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
• 1 year of relevant accounting experience is preferred.
• Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
• Good understanding of basic accounting principles and financial reporting.
• Strong analytical and numerical skills.
• High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
• Good organizational and time management skills.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive financial information.
