Internship: HPC Ecosystems Project About The Job The CSIR has an internship opportunity in the Centre for High Performance Computing (CHPC) within the National Integrated Cyberinfrastructure System (NICIS), which is hosted by the Next Generation Enterprises and Institution (NGEI) Cluster. The purpose of this internship is to provide graduates with an opportunity to gain practical work experience through cutting-edge technologies and innovative products for the regional and global HPC community. Under the guidance of the lead of the HPC Ecosystems Project, the position will work within cross-functional teams and engage with researchers and engineers. This position is based in Cape Town and will report to Research Manager: CHPC. Key Responsibilities Under supervision, the intern will be required to: Enhance the HPC workforce development pipeline by contributing to, and supporting delivery of, HPC education and training resources for the Projects scientific computing community; Contribute towards Project outreach and awareness initiatives through remote and in-person community engagements; Enhance the Project's community engagement efforts by actively creating and acquiring content for the Project website; Develop and test novel cyberinfrastructure and computing solutions for adoption by the HPC community; Author technical notes and community documentation; Repurpose and deploy HPC systems through the design, reconfiguration and assembly of HPC resources; Assist in the development and publication of case studies, reports, and scholarly research articles; Qualifications, Skills And Experience A Bachelors degree in computer science, electrical/electronic/computer engineering or related field; Proficiency with Linux shell environment; The following will be advantageous: Industry certification/s in ICT or STEM fields; Experience with HPC-related technologies, competitions, or labs (e.g. Student Cluster Competition or OpenHPC Virtual Lab); Knowledge of advanced computing technologies including InfiniBand, Software-Defined Networks, Cloud Computing, parallel file systems; Experience with networking technologies (including DHCP, PXE, TCP/IP, DNS, NFS); Experience with GitLab and/or GitHub; Experience with markup languages (including MarkDown); Practical knowledge of programming and/or shell scripting (for example: Python, C, Java, BASH) - a link to a personal GitHub profile is advantageous; Understanding of version control systems; Understanding of virtual machine technologies (for example: VirtualBox, VMware, Proxmox); Demonstrated experience in working with computer hardware and system services, from design to assembly and deployment; Problem-Solving: strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot complex issues; Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with team members and stakeholders; Knowledge of TCP/IP networking stack; Strong analytical, problem-solving skills as well as critical thinking skills; Ability to work in a collaborative environment but also to work independently; Time management skills; Ability to take initiative and adapt to team requirements; Detail-oriented, strong work ethic, and high standards of excellence; Fast learner, achiever, sets high personal goals; Must be able to multitask independently on multiple projects and meet their respective deadlines
