
Event and Communication Intern (Fall Internship)

Job Description
Founded in 1933, Mental Health America (MHA) of Central Carolinas’ mission is to advance mental wellness through education, advocacy, and access to support in Mecklenburg and Cabarrus Counties. MHA provides family support services to parents of children with behavioral, emotional, or mental health needs; peer support for adults living with chronic mental illnesses; and mental health education and preventative training to the broader community. MHA’s programs bring together mental health consumers, parents, advocates, and service providers to address systemic issues impacting mental health.

Position Summary
The Event and Communications Intern will play a key role in supporting MHA’s outreach and engagement efforts through event coordination, communications, and digital marketing. This is a hands-on opportunity to gain experience in nonprofit strategy, public engagement, and impact-focused event planning. The ideal candidate is creative, organized, and passionate about making a difference.
Key Responsibilities
Communications
• Help prepare and distribute MHA's monthly e-newsletters.
• Support cleanup and organization of email marketing platform lists in collaboration with the Development team.
• Assist in drafting professional and friendly emails, event updates, and volunteer communications.
• Participate in planning meetings and assist in keeping internal communication organized.
Digital Engagement
• Assist with website updates and maintenance.
• Support development and scheduling of static social media content.
• Contribute to email marketing campaigns and digital outreach efforts.
• Provide ideas and input on strategic digital engagement and visibility.
Event Support
• Assist in coordinating logistics for community outreach activities and fundraising events.
• Help manage event RSVPs, guest lists, and communications.
• Support day-of event operations, including setup, registration, and follow-up.
• Assist in creating event materials such as flyers, signage, and programs.
Qualifications
• Currently enrolled in or a recent graduate of a degree program.
• Must have availability to work nights and weekends for event support as needed.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Suite; familiarity with Canva, social media platforms, or donor management systems is a plus.
• Knowledge of WordPress preferred.
• Passion for nonprofit work and a willingness to learn and contribute.
